upstairs apartment

Well the upstairs apartment is finished. The studio space that we are renovating has a small efficiency apartment above the working area. I thought I would send some images....and yes we already rented it. Again these photos are really old there has been a lot done to the place since but I thought I would show you guys something. Still working on the actual studio. When we get some things done I will take some shots. I expect to move in late March, after SNAG.

As you all know we purchased a laser cutter/engraver in the painting and printmaking department here at VCU. Unfortunately it was damaged in shipping and that caused a bunch of problems. It is working but the Z-table where you lay your material to cut is out of whack making it hard to cut anything. I have been trying to run it through the ringer creating a list of materials that it can and can not be cut. At the same time I am creating a chart that tells you the settings to use when cutting specific materials. granted I have been getting really carried away with using the darn thing. In a earlier post I showed you some bracelets made out of cardboard. Now I am working on these plexi rings. In an ideal world the laser cut width on 1/8" plexi is .003" but since our machine is out if alignment I haven't been able to get a nice uniform edge. I thought I would post my current experiments. With this design You get two rings in one sheet. The snap out tabs act as stops for for the top to rest. I am working on doing some engraving cuts along those tabs so the plexi will snap in the proper place. I am really interested in this DIY jewelry as well making affordable pieces everyone can wear. As soon as we get our machine fixed we I will have a bunch of these. I am really excited.

more studio shots

well we are still working on our space but I found some before and after shots of the work we have been doing. I will be posting things when we get closer and closer. Until then here is an old shot of when we first bought the place and when we stripped it down.

new studio

thought I would post an image of the new studio space. In the photo, everything that has an awning is what we own. Its kind of a triangle/pie slice of a space. Its about 500 square feet on the bottom with a 500 square foot studio apartment above. There is a 200 square foot single story office attached which you will see in the salmon color(everything is separate) we are currently renting the apartment above in order to pay for the studio bills. I will post some inside shots here as soon as I can find them on my computer.

NEW WORK

I have a lot of new things happening. Things have been just crazy with school and shows and renovations on our new studio space. I finally wired the industrial lights on the ceiling. Now its....uh...bright. I think we have about four weeks until we can move in. I can't wait. I will have some before and after shots of the studio in the next post. Until then ....... This is white plexi gas mask brooch with a tie-tac pin back.

hmmm pimp daddy

quirk show, originally uploaded by arthur hash.

thought I would post this image of me wearing this gold chain sticker I made during my opening. I don't think anyone actually knew what it was. I thought it was funny but I think a lot of people took offense thinking I was making fun of them. I don't know. I just don't think Richmond is ready for fun weird designs. It gets better everyday. But I don't think we are there yet. Sometimes, I don't think Richmond will ever be there. Well thanks to Quirk for letting me take over part of their store!!! I had a great time.

LASERS~!!!

So we got a laser engraver/cutter in Painting and printmaking(one of three departments that I work for). I have been flipping out because I finally have a way to make some "punch-out" jewelry pieces that wont cost me a million dollars to have a die made for die-cutting. I am working on a couple of designs that have yet to be finalized but I am ready to throw a couple of them out into the blog-o-sphere and would like any input anyone has. The top of this design has a "rip-off" label for information on me and directions on how to punch them out. They are made from chipboard which for those of you who don't know it is a single ply cardboard. Also they have been "embossed" with recycle logos all over them so there is no confusion on what to do with them when you are done(the machine guns were just a test). So here are the results so far.-

GANGSTA.

so I thought this would be funny to go with the beards. Its kind of fun. I don't know maybe if anyone out there has any suggestions? I think it needs to be smaller and I might try a rope chain tonight to see if it will actually translate better. It kind of looks like a bike chain to me. Also I don't know if I am ripping anyone off or not. I thought the beard thing might be close to someone else's work that I discovered after making them. I am going to still roll with them because I don't really consider it an actual piece, just something fun that I had to try. Anyhoo.... arthur

Having trouble growing that facial hair?.....stop using those awful lotions and avoid painful transplants and get your stick on beard!!!

yep I thought it was cool so I did it. Now you too can have a beard of your own. Re-sticks up to four times.

Well its been a while. I have been busy.

I know that is no excuse but I wanted to post some images of new work that I am developing. The small pieces work as part of a larger "ideal" whole.

new stuff

So I just made these today. They are dry erase boards. I think I like the machine gun one the best.

sweet meeeeeeeeeaaaaaats!

I haven't been able to blog in a while because of being just insane-o busy at work so I thought I would get my holiday blogging out of the way. First Liz and I have been on the hunt for the Nintendo Wii for about four weeks now. We have been everywhere! We finally decided that the best way to get one is to camp out at the store until the ups man arrives and be the first in line. Well it finally happened and we got one. We where the second people in line! There were a total of three Wiis that arrived that day and about 10 people in line. I couldn't help but think about how I could have turned around and sold it for $100 more to the guy behind me but I am not that type of guy. Anyhoo to make a long story short Liz wrapped it up all nice and neat and put it under the tree. A couple of days went by and I can tell that Liz's excitement to play the Wii was escalating. She started talking about how cool its going to be to play "Bowling!","Tennis!" and "Boxing!" oh my. Soooooooooo we opened it. I told her if I get to open that she has to open one of her gifts. and this is what I got her..........Stuffed meats. I mean these are just about the coolest thing. I like the ham bone the best. Liz doesn't look that pleased but I think she was just side tracked about the Wii. Anyway check out the site and buy some stuff.

big plastic jewelry

well I braved the mall with liz the other day. I was actually surprised to see that there wasn't that many people there. I mean being the Christmas season and all I was surprised. I was also surprised to see that big plastic jewelry is in this year. I guess that is good news for me. Here are a couple shots of pieces I particularly liked.

The idea generator.

I know people have probably seen this thing but I had this conversation with Gabriel Craig about making pieces from pieces from pieces. I think this is just about the same: an idea from an idea from an idea. Kind of fun....check it out.

If you are local you can buy them at the Quirk Gallery if not of course I have them for sale on my Etsy page

No, I'm It

Corey Ackelmire tagged me. So now I have to post something to my blog which I haven't done in a while. So here goes

Five Random Facts about Arthur

1.
For the last five years my morning routine has been pretty close to the same:
wake up
find my glasses
turn on the coffee machine
let the dog outside
take a shower
make a cup of coffee using one tablespoon of cream and two tbsp of sugar
drink coffee
take a poo
brush my teeth
get dressed
let the dog back inside
go to work
If this routine is interrupted in any way (out of cream, out of toothpaste, dog
doesn't want to go out etc etc) I have a bad day.
I am such a robot.

2.
I secretly want to be a pastry chef Nazi where I ONLY make MY favorite things.
The pastries are so good I get to say "NO PASTRY FOR YOU!"

3.
When I am sleeping I sometimes sleep with my legs up in the air,it really freaks people out almost like a corpse sitting up.

4.
I have a phobia of smelling bad. Its not like a wash my hands all the time type of thing but I do use an extra amount of deodorant, foot powder and spritz.

5.
I am a Foodie. This is kind of funny because I am a very picky eater. I did however spend an obscene amount of money on kitchen equipment for my house. 15,000 BTU Restaurant grade oven, Industrial grade stainless hood and counter tops, butcher blocks and 24" x 36" cutting boards, Sheet pans, Kitchen Aide mixer, large set of global knives etc etc etc. Go figure. I like to eat....

I am supposed to link to five other people that I know but most of them have already been hit. so..... I am not sure how to deal with that.
Maybe I can come up with some more people.

I will be reporting all of the tasty step by step plays as I do every year (check my flickr photostream) hmmmm TUR-DUCK-IN!!! BABY!!
