Test Tiles

This is what I have been doing over break. Freaking test tiles. I got a kiln and a boat load of enamel and have been soooooo excited to actually use it/some. Of course we have to get the formalities over with first. These are just the opaque enamels. Now it is on to the transparent enamels. Some of the enamels are old and not firing properly. They are kind of old. Also we just found out something about the cat. If you put something on the her head she freezes up, hence the cat coaster.

I have been posting a lot lately. I think it is because turkey day is almost here. Also, I just ran out of gas in the studio. Anyhoo, I just saw this and couldn't stop laughing thought I would share. Via [Because Studio]

Just saw this via MoCo Loco. An Interesting idea from Trek. Everyone is trying to streamline their bikes. Replacing the chain with a belt seems like a logical step. I wonder how long that belt will last. When it does break will you still be able to buy a replacement years down the road?

I have always liked DROOG designs and I am happy they have opened an actual store. Just another place added to a long list of locations I would like to visit.

SPINNING!

I am working on processing the video from a spinning demo here at New Paltz. Here is what I have so far.

Made some new stuff for objectfetish.com (black coffee stains and cinder blocks)and I got my ponoko order (online laser cutting service). Not too shabby. Kind of smelly (burnt orange felt). I have to say that the pieces are incredibly accurate. I wasn't really expecting that. I will have to assemble them and post some more photos later. I also tried some experimentation with electroforming over some 3D prints. I am not sure how I like them though. My whole plan was electroforming them and then having them gold plated. I like the idea of having a gold version of these things. I don't know why.

GOOD morning.

Man I am soooooo morning person. I get up around 6 or 7-ish and feed the cats, let the dog outside, make the coffee, start a fire so we can keep warm, feed the dog, feed myself, poop, check the email and if I am lucky blog about something.....anything. I thought I would throw in a photo of the studio just to remind me to do work today. I think I may have solved my enamel on steel problem with "Hot Sifting" haven't tried it yet but I gonna get to it right after I chase the dog away from my pumpernickel bagel. FYI Liz actually fell asleep with her finger on her nose like that.

Why is it I always feel like I am getting ready for something.

Sometimes I forget about that something and I miss it.

whoahhh!! I gotta stop and blog

Dang. Well its been WAYYYY too long. I have been busy as usual. First It was Halloween. Liz and I threw a sweet mustache party. I think that is the fifth or sixth one that I have been involved with. I can't remember. I guess that is a sign of a good party. I had a blast thank you all for coming. The morning after the party Liz and I had to go to Princeton to her brother's, girlfriend's, best friend's, daughter's baptism. I think I got that right. It rocked. I had never been to a Greek function before. There are only a few things I can say to describe the whole thing: DANCE, EAT, DRINK, REPEAT and repeat and repeat. We had a great time. We stayed at a BEAUTIFUL B&B called the INN at Glencairn. The following day we went to downtown Princeton to go to a few local haunts like the House of Cupcakes (great cupcakes, I had a creme brulee cupcake.... it was good, Liz said it had too much frosting. hmmm frosting), then Princeton's campus (The campus church was freaking beautiful, the whole place was very harry potter/hogwarts) and the Princeton Record Exchange. We also went to Design Within Reach!!! the best store ever. I actually thought they were a mail order only store. But no, they have actual stores where you can actually sit in an Eames Molded Plywood Lounge Chair, Eames Louge and Ottoman and a Le Corbusier Chaise Longue they even had a Verner Panton cantilevered stacking chair. I was kind of shocked at the prices but hey it is Princeton and it is DWR so what the hell. Yes we bought something. Maaaannn. With our pockets empty we decided to come on home and get back to work chopping firewood to keep warm. Then I realized that there was a gallery that carries my work on the way. So I made a phone call and found out they were open on Sundays!

BONUS.

This was the first jewelry gallery stop that we have done since we moved to the area. I thought I would review a few of them since they are soooooo close (about an hour and a half). I would like to do more of these when we visit more galleries.

Gallery Loupe is a small place but it doesn't feel small when you walk inside. I am kind of a big dude and my claustrophobia was far from my mind. The way that everything is set up is great! I love it. They have some really nice upper lit wall cases and then in rolling carts below, glass topped drawers filled with work that you can interact with. The space is very inviting, intimate and interactive. They get three "I"s. It was also really nice to actually see a lot of the work out.

Liz and I got to meet Patti Bleicher(one of the owners/operators) and got a quick personal tour. It was really hard for me to keep my composure. All I wanted to do was look through drawers and touch stuff like a kid in an elevator pressing all the buttons. I am such a metals/jewelry nerd I had to see all of it. Seeing all of the work was great but touching it was even better. Klaus Burgel and Barbara Seidenath's pieces made a big impression. Patti took Liz and I on a car tour of the area which was great! Loupe has some upcoming openings. I will post the dates soon.

The current show at Loupe: "Facsimile"/Kathleen Browne was in full swing with almost all of the gallery's central real estate covered with her work. Kathleen's pieces for the show were "copies" of gem stones made with enameled decals of photos taken from actual stones. Then these "stones" were assembled into neck pieces and bracelets attached with stretch cables crimped at the ends. It was almost like Pop Art colliding with over the top Fashion jewelry. I am always a fan of big jewelry.




So in reverse order Loupe, B&B, DWR, Princeton, Cupcakes, Halloween. Whew!

Just found this. I year ago I ordered VCU's painting and printmaking A wacom CINTIQ 21UX but never really had a good reason to use it. Now that I have found this I am all in. Maybe New Paltz will want one?
I am always trying to bridge the gap between analog and digital in my studio practice. Recently I have to abandon prototyping and laser cutting and go back to the basics. It has been refreshing and gratifying. Saying that, I am still interested in all things digital. I would love to try this out just to see if it is as fluid as it appears. No one likes re-learning the interface when moving from one 3D package to another (Rhino to Maya for example) My brain gets confused and I find myself clicking control instead of shift or whatever. This just seems like one of those things that would need some time to get used to. Damn you brain.

I hate to advertise for a product but.... Liz ordered me this for my birthday and it just came in the mail. I am a sucker for kitchen gadgets so immediately I loved it. Its made of high impact plastic and has this ceramic ball inside that pummels the crap out of spices or herbs or whatever. Its actually a great idea. I had seen it on the food network via : Jamie Oliver some time ago. I think I tried ordering it but it wasn't being sold on "this side of the pond". Anyhoo just thought I would post about it since I have been doing a lot of cooking lately. My only complaint is that I wish it was bigger. It makes the perfect amount of marinade/dry rub/sauce or whatever for two servings but you will have to double the process for anything more. Great idea.
